Non-normal operators

When interacting directions are not independent, stability cannot be read from eigenvalues alone.
In lived experience

A person may look “stable” between events and still be highly amplifiable when several ordinary pressures point in the same direction.

Definition

A linearized operator is non-normal when it does not commute with its adjoint. Its modes need not be orthogonal, so decaying directions can combine constructively and produce substantial short-time growth. Long-run stability and immediate vulnerability can therefore tell different stories.

Transient growth

A small perturbation can grow dramatically before eventually decaying.

The size of the response does not reveal the size of the trigger; it reveals the trigger–system relationship.

Definition

Transient growth is finite-time amplification. A system can be asymptotically stable—every eigenmode eventually decays—while particular combinations of modes first become much larger. What matters clinically is not only where the system ends, but how high the response rises on the way there.

This gives language to disproportionate waves without calling them irrational. A cue, tone or memory fragment may be small in physical magnitude but precisely aligned with a sensitized system. Prevention then asks how to reduce gain, interrupt alignment and place support before the peak.

Pseudospectra and hidden fragility

A geometry of how small model changes can reveal large sensitivity.
In lived experience

A quiet week can be real and still coexist with a narrow safety margin. Stability should be tested by recovery, not inferred from stillness alone.

Definition

The pseudospectrum asks where the spectrum could move under bounded perturbation, equivalently where the resolvent becomes large. It exposes systems whose apparent stability is fragile: tiny changes to the operator can produce qualitatively different response potential.

Flow Hijacked uses pseudospectral thinking to separate observed calm from margin to instability. Two people with the same average symptom score may differ sharply in sensitivity, burstiness and recovery after perturbation. The hidden question becomes: how much uncertainty can the present field tolerate?

Resolvent and gain

Which patterns of forcing receive the strongest response from this system?
In lived experience

The same cue can be nearly silent in one state and deafening in another. Context changes gain.

Definition

Resolvent analysis maps inputs to responses around a dynamical regime. Large gain means that forcing with a particular spatial or temporal pattern can produce a large output. The key object is not a trigger in isolation, but the system's frequency- and direction-dependent receptivity to it.

A recovery field may be sensitive at particular times: evenings, conflict, payday, fatigue or social exposure. The useful translation is not to fear every input equally, but to identify high-gain combinations and place friction, contact or regulation where receptivity is greatest.

Perturbation geometry

Direction, timing and alignment matter as much as magnitude.
In lived experience

A small action can be pivotal when it meets the right moment; a correct action can fail when the system cannot yet receive it.

Definition

A perturbation is an input that moves a system away from its current trajectory. Its effect depends on where the system is, the direction of the input, timing, duration and coupling. A modest input aligned with a sensitive direction can matter more than a larger input applied elsewhere.

This is why treatment is not simply “more intervention.” A well-timed conversation, protected night of sleep or brief exposure may redirect motion; the same input delivered during overload may amplify distress. Choreography means matching input to state and window.

Coupled amplification

Several ordinary processes can form one extraordinary cascade.
In lived experience

The crisis may have many parents. That is not an excuse; it is a more useful map of where responsibility and support can act.

Definition

Coupling means that change in one variable alters the evolution of another. Sleep, threat, craving, shame, relationship and opportunity are therefore not independent risk boxes. Feedback and feedforward links can create cascades whose total growth cannot be understood one factor at a time.

Flow Hijacked lens

Flow Hijacked looks for loops: poor sleep increases reactivity; conflict increases shame; shame increases secrecy; secrecy removes co-regulation; isolation increases the apparent value of rapid relief. Intervention can enter any link, but high-leverage links are those that weaken several downstream processes.
