A snapshot can miss the system
Two people can report the same average distress and inhabit very different landscapes. One may move among work, contact, rest and sadness, then return after a difficult evening. The other may appear equally calm at interview while living inside a narrow range that collapses under a small disruption. A mean score records level. It does not necessarily reveal repertoire, fragility or the cost of return.
Flow Hijacked therefore treats time as part of the measurement. We ask how states fluctuate, which transitions recur, what happens after conflict or sleep loss, whether a small cue is amplified, and how long the system takes to recover. None of these replaces symptom scales or diagnosis. They add the missing verbs: moving, slowing, amplifying, switching and returning.
A score tells us where the needle is; dynamics tell us how the whole instrument behaves.

What a dynamical profile observes
Variability asks whether life contains flexible difference or chaotic volatility. Entropy asks how broad and unpredictable the repertoire is, but high entropy is not automatically healthy: a stable routine can be protective, while random switching can be exhausting. Recovery rate asks how quickly function returns after perturbation. Amplification asks whether several ordinary pressures combine into a disproportionate response. Navigability asks whether valued states can be reached with the resources actually available.
These quantities should be profiles, not rankings. A week may show better sleep and wider social contact while also showing slower recovery after conflict. That mixed pattern is not a failed score; it is useful information about where the landscape is changing and where support is still needed. The person remains the interpreter of whether a measured transition means vitality, avoidance, effort, danger or repair.
No single dynamical quantity means health outside the pattern and the life that give it context.

Signals across scales
A careful measurement architecture can combine brief first-person reports, sleep and activity patterns, clinical conversation, social contact, task performance and, in research settings, neural or physiological signals. Convergence matters more than technological glamour. A wearable cannot know whether a quiet afternoon was restorative solitude or depressive withdrawal. A questionnaire cannot know whether a high-activity day was meaningful engagement or agitated overextension. Each signal constrains the others.
The ethical rule is proportionality. Collect only what can answer a defined question, protect privacy, disclose uncertainty and never turn monitoring into a substitute for relationship. Measurement should make earlier, kinder conversation possible. If it makes a person hide, perform or feel permanently watched, the measurement field itself may increase the dynamics it was supposed to detect.
The most advanced sensor is still incomplete without context, consent and first-person meaning.

Measurement as a map for return
The public use of this framework is modest and practical. Notice a personal baseline. Look for change rather than perfection. Ask what happened to sleep, contact, movement, honesty, future reach and return time. Pair every warning sign with a pre-agreed route back: a conversation, a clinical appointment, a protected night, a meeting, food, movement, medication review or reduced exposure to risk. The route must fit the person and the seriousness of the situation.
The purpose is not prediction without error. Human systems are open, adaptive and only partly observed. The purpose is to shorten the distance between drift and useful attention. A measurement earns its place when it helps someone say, earlier and with less shame, ‘something is changing; let us look at it together.’
Measurement is humane when it opens a route back before a change becomes a verdict.

Testimony, not proof
The model has to return to a life.
In recovery I learned that a day could look successful from the outside while the field was quietly narrowing. Work was still done, training still happened, language still sounded clear—but sleep had shortened, contact had thinned and privacy was beginning to become secrecy. A single score would have called the day functional. A trajectory made the drift visible.
That is why I do not want measurement to become a machine standing above the person. I want it to help the person notice what intelligence and pride can sometimes explain away: the slower return, the smaller world, the call not made, and also the quiet gains that no dramatic outcome captures.
